Purchasing a Vehicle

The following documents will be required to complete the application for title and vehicle registration:

Please note: The office may have the option to print your title if a current Colorado Driver's License is presented and the computer safety checks are valid. Titles sent to the state for processing will be mailed to the owner, if there are no liens on the vehicle. If there is a lien, the title will be mailed to the lienholder. Please allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.

New Resident

Within 90 days of establishing Colorado residency, or upon being gainfully employed, new residents must apply for a Colorado registration for their vehicles. The following documents are required:

License Plates

Transfer of License Plates:
License plates in Colorado are the property of the original owner of the vehicle and do not transfer to the new buyer at the time of the sale. Plates may be transferred from your traded-in or sold vehicle to your newly purchased vehicle. You may also purchase new plates from our office. If you decide to use existing plates please bring in the plates and registration from your old vehicle.

Types of License Plates:
The State of Colorado currently issues over 101 different plate types. Many types are available in the county and others are only available through the state office. For a tour of Colorado plates types and requirements, see:

Personalized Plates

Personalized plates are available for additional charges as follows:

  • Regular Personalized Plates (green and white)
    $60.00 Application fee
    $25.00 Annual Renewal Fee
    $50.00 Replacement Fee

  • Colorado Designer Personalized Plates (green with purple mountains)
    $85.00 Application fee
    $50.00 Annual Renewal Fee
    $50.00 Replacement Fee

A completed form DR2810 is required and must be sent to the state office. Upon acceptance of your plate choice, you will receive a billing notice requesting payment of the appropriate fee. Payment is required prior to manufacture of your plate.

Special Title Transfers

Deceased Owner:
Titles held in joint tenancy may be transferred to the survivor upon payment of a title transfer fee and submission of the title and a copy of the death certificate.Titles held in solely the deceased owner's name may be transferred by the executor or personal representative of the estate or the successor (estates less than $50,000). The following will have to be submitted to our office:

  1. Title in the name of the deceased, signed by the executor, pers. rep. or successor.
  2. copy of the death certificate
  3. A small estates affidavit (if the estate is valued at $50,000 or less). Small estate affidavit forms are available in our office. OR
  4. A copy of any court order giving applicant the right to finalize the estate.

Bond Title:
The bonding procedure is followed when the required documents for titling are not available or are incorrect. The vehicle must be physically located in Colorado, roadworthy, and in your possession before completing the bonding procedure.

Special Mobile Machinery (SMM)

All mobile machinery that is used on or off road must be registered. SMM's are generally not titled. These include, but are not limited to, welders, backhoes, forklifts, ditchers, trenchers, loaders, graders, etc. Year, make, manufactures suggested retail price when new, and weight are required at time of registration. Sales tax may be applicable.

Manufactured Homes

Due to House Bill 1260, additional fees and forms are required. All transfers require a
Manufactured Home Transfer Declaration.
